Just when you think they can't get any lower
As part of an information offensive in Iraq, the US military is secretly paying Iraqi newspapers to publish stories written by American troops in an effort to burnish the image of the US mission in Iraq.
The articles, written by US military "information operations" troops, are translated into Arabic and placed in Baghdad newspapers with the help of a defense contractor, according to US military officials and documents obtained by the Los Angeles Times.
Many of the articles are presented in the Iraqi press as unbiased news accounts written and reported by independent journalists. The stories trumpet the work of US and Iraqi troops, denounce insurgents and tout US-led efforts to rebuild the country.
Though the articles are basically factual, they present only one side of events and omit information that might reflect poorly on the US or Iraqi governments, officials said. Records and interviews indicate that the US has paid Iraqi newspapers to run dozens of such articles, with headlines such as "Iraqis Insist on Living Despite Terrorism," since the effort began this year.

Ya Khalid-
Let me preface this by saying that the following does not take into consideration any of the injustices or...possible legality or lack there of concerning the situation in Iraq!!
Now, I agree that this US practice lacks moral substance. If the US wants to encourage honesty and "democratic" values such as true freedom of press, it should lead by example.
That being said, I think you point out something important in your response- it is important to hear both sides of the story :) I think it is important to recognize a lot of the stuff that is run by Iraqi papers spreads lies not only about the Coalition, but about Iraqis- all depending on the slant of the author.
It doesnt make it any less wrong...but in the interest of seeing the bigger picture :)
Salaam!
We knew that they were doing this anyway. Remember the incident where some sharp eyed reader noted the word-for-word repetition of a statement by an "Iraqi" ... in 2 SEPERATE incidents? Remember the Firdous square BS where a hundred people, through clever camera angles, was made to seem like thousands? Nothing new. But at least now we have OFFICIAL confirmation of our suspicions...
Are you kidding me! You expect the U.S. to pay/support/allow anti-U.S. -- pro-terrorist articles in a WAR zone to promote fairness ? Are you nuts? Did the English or Americans allow the Nazi to publish their view in American/English newspapers/radio DURING WWII?
this is so bad, I am sure that there are some good things that the US troops are doing for your people, but this junk will make so that any good that is actually done..will not be believed. The present "leaders" here are just awful, and I feel hopeful that the "people" will use better judgment next time. (just 3 years to go)

I take it you advocate the violent closure of 'enemy' news sources? You do realise that such an attitude legitimises attacks on "your" news sources and journalists as well ...?
Anon-
I would venture to say that there is quite a difference between WWII and the US invasion of Iraq. Let us compare apples with apples...even if they are rotten.
They get even lower...

Veiled ode to George Bush deleted from Pakistani textbooks

At first sight it is little more than a poetic polemic about the virtues of an effective leader. But a poem has been removed from school textbooks in Pakistan after it became clear that the first letter of each line spelt out "President George W Bush".
Penned by an anonymous writer, The Leader embarrassed education officials in the country after it found its way into an English textbook for 16-year-olds.
The 20-line work, which was first printed last year, includes the lines: "Never back down when he sees what is true/Tells it all straight, and means it all too/Going forward and knowing he's right/Even when doubted for why he would fight."
And the poetic description of the ideal leader continues: "Over and over he makes his case clear/Reaching to touch the ones who won't hear/Growing in strength, he won't be unnerved/Ever assuring he'll stand by his word/Wanting the world to join his firm stand."
The revelation is likely to embarrass Pakistan's president Pervez Musharraf, who has been criticised at home for taking what has been perceived to be a pro-American stance in supporting the Bush administration's so-called war on terror.
An official working with the Pakistan Education ministry told the Times of India: "We have decided to delete the poem from the book, published by the National Book Foundation, and prescribed for federal board students.
"It will be stretching the matter too far to assert that the poem was inserted in the book deliberately to enumerate the qualities of President Bush."
An investigation has been launched to find out how the work was not spotted by the committees which censor the content of textbooks. It was first printed in A Textbook of English last year after the Pakistani government took the decision to deregulate the publication of textbooks.
The leader
Patient and steady with all he must bear,
Ready to accept every challenge with care,
Easy in manner, yet solid as steel,
Strong in his faith, refreshingly real,
Isn't afraid to propose what is bold,
Doesn't conform to the usual mold,
Eyes that have foresight, for hindsight wont do
Never back down when he sees what is true
Tells it all straight, and means it all too
Bracing for war, but praying for peace
Using his power so evil will cease:
So much a leader and worthy of trust,
Here stands a man who will do what he must
Muhammad, thanks for that post. I'm starting to believe that there are no depths left unplumbed in the efforts of the neocons to indoctrinate the world...
Subliminal messages, geeeeeeez, are the neocons so retarded or so desperate? How can someone who isn't completely debrained ever trust america as a nation again?
It gets more and more sickening to surf the net for news.

I let the above amusing comment get through just to make your day:)) i feel sad for my American friends for having to live with people with this mentality in one country, i can understand their frustration, and check his comment also on the thread before this one:))
